Client: National Grid Gas
Project Type:
Vacuum Excavation
Project Date:
April 2013

The project brief was to excavate and expose a large bore high pressure gas main so that the engineers could undertake essential maintenance works. The valve was located at a depth of 4m and required a overall excavation size of 6m x 4 x 4m deep.

During the dig, bespoke shoring was constructed as per our civil engineers designs. Due to the high risk of possible damage to the pipe, no mechanical excavators could be used. The vacuum excavator worked exceptionally well in these circumstances, safely removing over 140m3 of bulked  spoil and exposing a number of both small bore gas lines and a number or LV services. Without this method of dig, the excavation would have been a long drawn out process by hand alone with increased hazards associated with working within confined spaces and manual handling.
